Uncertainty over global economic impact on scallop industry

Posted November 4, 2008 11:20:00

The Queensland Seafood Industry Association says it is hard to know how the global financial crisis will affect the scallop season.

Queensland's trawling areas south of Mackay were reopened at the weekend, and while many will be chasing prawns, most boats between Yeppoon and Bundaberg will be targeting scallops.

The seafood association's trawler chairman, Robin Hanson, says Queensland scallops are highly sought after in the the Asian market, but it is hard to predict if demand will be affected by the economic slowdown.

"It will be interesting to see how the market develops with all the world's financial markets and just the Australian dollar value, it's also having an impact," he said.

"We're not too sure just how really the market is going to play out, everything is in a little bit of grey area until we start production and the processing and we start to look at what the market is going to do."
