Tasmanian Liberal Senator Guy Barnett is calling for Australia to ditch the Queen's birthday public holiday and replace it with an Australian alternative.
Senator Barnett says the holiday is an anachronism because Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21.
Senator Barnett says a new holiday reflecting modern day Australia should take its place.
"I've indicated and suggested that we could have a day to recognise Australia's volunteers," Senator Barnett said.
"They contribute 800 million hours each year many of the volunteers have been recognised for example in the awards and the honours that have been announced and granted publicly today."
